Abstract

This qualitative study aimed to analyzing the reality of distance education system at University of Aden, with regard to its components, challenges, and coming up with a picture based on perspectives aimed to developing it as an indicator of its total quality. It is a case study of a faculty of distance education, which adopts the distance educational system alongside the traditional educational system in undergraduate and postgraduate programs at University of Aden. The study sample consisted of 22 purposeful nonrandomly selected participants. Data collection tools were personal interviews, observations during field visits, and review of relevant documents and archival records. The study adopted a qualitative approach that deals with describing, understanding and delving into the case. In the light of in-depth analysis, the study developed comprehensive main themes and sub-themes related to the study question, based on Open System Theory and System Analysis Method as a theoretical framework. The study results diagnosed the reality of the components of the system, with their pros and cons, as challenges facing the achievement of the system’s objectives, and the reform procedures for its development. According to the results, conclusions, recommendations, and suggestions were drawn.
